Medical Research Internship (May-August 2016, Toronto)

The Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR) is a non-profit and non-partisan organization associated with the University of Toronto and St Michael’s Hospital. CGHR’s mission is to lead high-quality public health research that advances global health for all, with particular attention to the world’s poorest populations. Its flagship project, the Million Death Study (MDS), is run in collaboration with the Government of India and documents causes of death across the country.

We are looking for a student in Medicine (2nd or 3rd year), Nursing or Pharmacy (preferably 1st or 2nd year) who has completed academic courses in HIV, Tropical Medicine and Febrile illnesses. Clinical experience in these areas, as well as research experience, including conducting Literature Reviews, is an asset. The student will work closely with a team of multidisciplinary and international scientists, researchers and analysts working on a large-scale HIV-related epidemiological project. This is a summer internship position, starting May 2016.


The successful candidate will work closely with researchers and project coordinators at CGHR and internationally to review and extract relevant information from clinical charts and verbal autopsy records of HIV and TB patients. They will also conduct an exhaustive Literature Review of HIV symptoms, treatment, treatment failures and co-morbidities. They will be required to apply the information gathered towards designing a tool to reduce the clinical and health system gaps leading to HIV deaths. Demonstrated ability to be an enthusiastic and self-motivated learner, work well independently and within a team, and be a critical thinker is essential to this position. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience and skills while contributing to a global HIV epidemiological study.


  • A student in Medicine (2nd or 3rd year), Nursing or Pharmacy (preferably 1st or 2nd year) who has completed academic courses in HIV, Tropical Medicine and Febrile Illnesses.
  • Clinical or research experience in HIV, Tropical Medicine and Febrile Illnesses is an asset.
  • Familiarity with research methods/ techniques, and demonstrated experience with search methods, literature reviews, statistical techniques and quantitative methods is preferred
  • Ability to collect, compile data and information in a presentable format
  • Working knowledge in statistical packages including R, STATA etc. will be an added advantage
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Accuracy of work, time management skills, and ability to meet deadlines is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and adapt quickly to changing requirements
  • Excellent oral and writing skills and a detail-oriented approach to work
  • Interest in health issues of developing countries is required
  • Any prior experience in global health research will be an asset
